101% completion
After you get all the trophies and N.Oxide finishes
talking, you will end up in front of his arena. Do not enter.
Instead, just go along and finish getting all the remaining relics
and CTR tokens. When you get all of these, race N.Oxide at the
final race. When you defeat him, it would be seem that you finished
the game at 101%.
Firing poison potions forward
Press [Up] or "Left Analog-stick Up" while
pressing [Circle] to fire poison potions forward.
Fire bowling bombs backwards
Press [Down] or "Left Analog-stick Down"
while pressing [Circle] to fire bowling bombs backward.
Firing missiles backwards
Note: This trick is very difficult to perform and has
about a 75% chance of hitting somebody when done correctly. After
getting a missile, press [R2] + [Down] to look back
and fire at the same time. Somebody must be visible behind you
in order to get hit. The CPU racers use this technique when the
game is played under the hard difficulty setting in arcade mode.
Unlimited missiles
Enable the "Unlimited bomb" code in an arcade
race. Hit one of the enemy's red poisons. This will take away
the bombs. Later, if you get a triple missile pick-up, it will
be unlimited. Note: This will not work in some levels because
you cannot get the triple missile power-up.
Quick start
Three green lights and one red light will appear at
the start of a race. Press [X] to accelerate immediately
before the red one lights up to get a speed burst.
To get an even faster turbo start, keep revving your engine until
the engine bar at the right hand side of your screen is red and
full. If the bar is full and the green light has gone, your start
would be faster than a normal turbo start.
Speed boost
The AkuAku/UkaUka masks can give you a speed boost.
While having a AkuAku/UkaUka mask, power slide by holding [L1]
or [R1] while driving. That will give you a super boost,
Note: You will go even faster if you have a turbo boost.
To go faster on a turbo pad, jump as soon as you hit it.
Faster Relic Races time
Collect all the time boxes in any Relic Race and ten
seconds will be taken off your final time.
Dodging Homing Rockets
Look for a wall to hide behind.
Place a Poison Potion, TNT Crate, or throw a Bowling Bomb at the
last second. Note: If done with Nitro Crates, the explosion will
hit you. If you have one, drop it moments before and continue
in a straight line.
Try to hide behind other player.
Jump at the last second. The rocket will explode, but it will
not damage you. Recommended for experts only.
Power slide from left to right frequently. If done correctly,
the rocket will miss you and hit the wall or other players.
Fire a rocket backwards. As the player who launched it to you
was the nearest, the nearest player to you may be him. The rockets
may crash with each other.
Dodging Warp Balls
As it hits the first player, if you are first, brake
and wait for somebody to get in first place. The Warp Ball may
not hit you, unless the player who launched was juiced up.
Squishing opponent
You can use a turbo powerup (not a turbo pad, or the
superfast turbo which only appears in battle mode) to run over
someone. They will get squished, and you will get a jump in the
air. When you land you will get a turbo.
Defeating the CPU
If you are racing against the CPU and find yourself
stuck in fourth place and cannot catch up, drop back to eigth
place after getting ten Wumpa Fruit. When you get a power-up,
it will almost always be the Energy Ball, Aku Aku or three Homing
Missiles. You should be able to knock everyone off the track and
speed to the front. The other characters slow down if it appears
you are doing badly.
Blizzard Bluff: Shortcut
Immediately past the start/finish line is a channel
through the rocks that allows you to cut across and miss the first
left hand turn. A mask obviously makes this faster, so the snow
will not slow you down.
At the first frozen lake, power slide left and jump over ravine.
You will land just past tunnel bridge. A mask helps here, but
is not necessary.
After making the right hand turn after the tunnel bridge, look
on your left. There is a channel through the rocks that cuts across
the left hand curve. With a mask, you can hit the hill on the
right side of the passage and jump the guardrail to cut across.
Cortex Castle: Shortcut
While racing on Cortex Castle, shortly after the two
spiders and past the flight of stairs, you will see a path that
goes up into the castle. Go to the far right side and drive diagonally
left, up the hill. When you get to the very peak of the hill,
jump and you should land on a path that is cut off from the main
raceway. This trick is hard to do but is extremely effective.
When you come down from the drop-off stairs, there will be a jump
ahead of it. Take that jump and turn to the left. There will be
a ledge that you can land on.
Crash Cove: Shortcut
Near the beginning of the track is a ramp with two
fruit boxes at the end of it, just before a small lake. Stay to
the right of the ramp and begin turning left toward the mountain
once you pass the ramp. You will be driving through the lake.
You will have to practice this, but it dips right before you would
run into the mountain. As your head goes completely underwater,
hold [Jump]. You will jump onto the shortcut and can pick
up a box before jumping back down and rejoining the race near
the bridge. You can begin your turn when you pass the single star
on the ground just to the right of the ramp. You will be jumping
onto the land that is connected to the bridge that you drive under
which leads out to that boat to your right.
Turn left immediately after the first jump when you land in the
water. Jump at the very left edge of this pond. You will land
on a ledge which allows you to gain a second or two of time. This
is very difficult to perform, and requires practice to get the
correct. It is the only way to get the "T" on the Crash
Cove CTR Challenge.
Dragon Mines: Shortcut
About a quarter of the way through the race is a railroad
track with coal cars on it that go to the right. Follow the coal
cars into the tunnel in the side of the wall, then follow the
railroad track until it appears at the middle section of the track.
You will get run over by the coal cars, but you will still end
up ahead.
Before the end of the lap is a blue brick road and sand. Instead
of going through the sand, cut through the blue brick road with
a mask and go to the finish line.
Hot Air Skyway: Shortcut
Apart from the obvious piece of track in the first
jump, if super turbo pads are enabled, at the last big jump (where
a blimp is across), jump at the last second to your right side.
If done correctly, you will be at the entrance of the blimp, in
front of the start line.
Make your way to the part where the track is split up into two
by the red wall with little oval windows. Once you get down the
slope by the wall, turn around by breaking, and get enough speed
for going up the ramp. Once you jump at the end of the ramp, make
a sharp turn in the air and go over the wall. You can get in front
of every other character, and can defeat N. Oxide very easily.
Near the end of the track, there is a very sharp turn that has
four "?" boxes. With a Mask, a Turbo Boost or a Power
Slide, you can jump over the wall of that turn. You will be farther
ahead, but you cannot get a box.
Mystery Caves: Shortcut
There is a shortcut that can be used with a mask. Immediately
following the first sandtrap/jump area, turn left with a mask
activated. This leads through a stalagmite-stalactite area that
shortcuts a long curve.
Oxide Station: Shortcut
There are three turbo pads after the first tunnel.
After the third pad, turn left and jump over wall to land on the
lower of the two tracks for a huge shortcut. Note: You cannot
accomplish this with super turbo pads, as you will go too far.
Papu Pyramid: Shortcut
In Papu's Pyramid, go to the part where steps appear.
Go on the right side where the turbo is located. Hit it and immediately
go left and jump onto the ledge. Follow it and you will jump right
onto the bridge and get an apple box.
In Papu Pyramid, before you get to the turn before the stairs,
there are two bars that have arrows pointing to the right. Go
between them, but keep to the right and jump at the last second
to land on a hidden ledge. Then, jump off it. If done correctly,
you will land on the other shortcut, or be lined up for it.
There is a jump on the way to the hairpin turn by the finish line
. If you time a jump perfectly, you can get across to the other
side. This trick has a near 100% chance if done with Aku Aku/Uka
Uka or a speed boost. Also, when you approach the other end of
the track, release [X] and press [Circle] + [Right]
to turn in the air so you do not fall off the other end.
There is a big jump to a big turn near the piranha plants. Use
a mask or turbo on the big jump and take a hard right turn to
land on the downward slope. Note: To do this without a mask, do
the second shortcut then jump off. When you are close the third
shortcut, make sure you are in the middle. Drive to the left and
use the hill next to the wall as a ramp and jump. This trick requires
practice and is easier if you are either Tiny, N. Trophy, or Dingodile.
Before you go down the big stairs, there is a big gap. You do
not need anything to help you across. When you hit the jump, press
[R1] to get some speed. When you get up there, do not go
straight or you will hit the plant and he will eat you. Just go
slightly ahead and turn right. You will land on a bridge and you
will get to the two set of plants.
Polar Pass: Shortcut
There is a wall before the jump at Polar Pass. Enable
the "Unlimited masks" code and use it before the wall
to jump over it.
When you travel through the cave near the end of the race you
will see a wall with arrows pointing to the right. Go straight
ahead and jump off the very peak of the hill. Take the sharpest
turn possible to the left and you can go cut a lot of time off
your run.
Enable the "Super turbo pads" code. Get to the turbo
pad before the little jumps with pads. Go on the pad, then slightly
bump into the wall and hop while turning right. You will go on
the other side. You will have a 50% chance of making the jump
on staying on the track.
When you are in the cave/tunnel, you can jump over the yellow
and black arrows instead of doing that sharp corner. This will
allow you to gain time.
Note: You do not need a mask for this shortcut, but it helps.
At the first frozen lake, there are two open spaces on the left.
If you take the first one, you will need a mask but it puts you
fairly far ahead. The second one is slightly slower, but it will
most likely move you up a few positions.
Roo's Tubes: Shortcut
Get a mask and put it on at the last set of speed boosters.
On the last jump, turn left and go to the left of the bones. Get
back on the track just before the finish line.
At the end of the track, hit the turbo pad and drive slightly
to the left. Jump and power slide to the goal. This should give
you a two to three second advantage.
Sewer Speedway: Shortcut
In Sewer Speedway, you can take a shortcut that will
enable you to go faster and end up ahead of the pack. This shortcut
can be reached with a speed power-up. Go into the tunnels immediately
after the first part. Stay on the left ledge and look above the
right ledge. You will see a hole in the wall. Speed into it and
follow the pathway.
Note: This shortcut can be reached without a speed power-up. When
you get into the tunnels, stay on the right ledge. When you get
to the first left-hand corner, start a sharp turn left so that
you are about to drive onto the left ledge. Before getting onto
the ledge, jump and turn 180 degrees and land back on the bank.
You will get a hang time turbo. Drive across the track and jump
as you are about to get onto the right ledge. If done correctly,
you will be able to reach the hole. It may take some practice,
but it is possible.
When you get to the hole in the wall after the fork (you can get
there by using the floor as a ramp. for details, watch Oxide's
ghost), instead of going to the other side, drop to the track.
This is quicker, and you may get a fruit box.
In the second tunnel, go all the way to one side then press [R1]
or [L1], and then press the opposite direction on the D-Pad.
Note: You will need an accelerated driver such as Tiny Tiger.
Slide Coliseum: Shortcut
There is a very sharp turn at Slide Coliseum. Get a
Mask or Speedburst. Use the little hill as a ramp and jump over
it. Drive straight and you will be at the end of the turn.
The turns in slide coliseum are difficult for some people. With
a Mask, Power Slide, or Turbo Boost (whichever you prefer)m you
can cut the turns by jumping over the tires and grass, and landing
on the other side of it.
Tiger Temple: Shortcut
Half way through the track where the radar shows the
shortcut is a spot on the wall that has two rows of rectangles,
with one row above the other. Both rows have five rectangles.
The rectangles are positioned long ways up and down. Hit the wall
and it will open.
Half way through the course is a very big idol-like object on
the left. You can crash through it, but only if you have one of
the Masks. This will lead you through a little tunnel and when
you come out, you will have bypassed most of the track.
There is an idol-like statue after the first tunnel. You can use
that shortcut shown on the map, and can open the shortcut with
everything except a Warp Ball, a Turbo power-up, and a Nitro.
You can use a Nitro to keep the shortcut open.
When you get to the first tunnel, use the hills to go to the other
side. Note: This may require accurate jumps.
Tiger Temple: Keep shortcut entrance
open
This trick can be done when playing with more than
one person in multi-player mode. First, open the Tiger Temple
shortcut and have the other player place a nitro where the shortcut
opens. On the next lap, you will see that the Tiger Temple shortcut
entrance will be open.
You can also do this in one player mode, but it is difficult.
First, get an Uka Uka/Aku Aku. Put it on just before the last
"?" box that appears before the shortcut. If you get
a nitro, you can put it in the right place.
Papu Papu Challenge
Papu Papu is fast. If you can get the three pack missiles,
do not shoot immediately. The group of 90 degree turns is where
you can hit him the best.
Defeating Bosses
Do not stay directly behind a Boss to avoid getting
hit by power-ups. A Boss cannot hit you if you are in front of
him, so drive fast.
Power slides
Power slides are always good for any turn, but if [L1]
or [R1] is held too long you will spin out and lose precious
time.
Get a boost while power sliding
If you are power sliding with [R1], press [L1]
to get a boost or vice versa. This is helpful to get around tight
turns.
Lose TNT box
When you get a TNT box on you, immediately start pressing
[R1] rapidly. If you do not react fast enough this may not
work. You will know if it worked because the TNT box will get
off of you.
Placing TNT Boxes in mid-air
Get a TNT box and press [Circle] to drop it while
going off a jump. This is very effective because it will be much
more difficult to dodge the TNT box.
Placing Potions in the mid-air
This trick is similar to putting TNT Boxes in the air,
but much more effective. Put red and green potions in the air
immediately after a jump. Just let them go and they will stay
there. When someone goes over a jump and hits it, they will usually
fall and not make it across. You will be able to gain a lot of
ground on them, but make sure you do not hit your own potions
on the next lap.
Better use of Aku Aku/ Uka Uka masks
If you ever get an unjuiced mask, get juiced up before
you use it so you have the mask for a longer time.
Glitch: Masks with Penta Penguin
When you play Penta Penguin and get a Mask, you get
an Aku Aku mask instead of the Uka Uka mask that is shown.
Use Penta Penguin in battle or race mode. Try to get a mask. The
picture should be of Uka Uka, but when you use it the mask circling
Penta will be Aku Aku.
Glitch: Turbo does not work
When there is a turbo space, go behind it. Then, accelerate
and try to stop on it, holding only [Square]. If done correctly,
the turbo will not work.
Glitch: Strange game text
As soon as the game starts to load after turn on the
PlayStation, press [X], [Square], [Triangle], [Circle],
[Triangle], [Square], [X] and repeat that pattern
in a rhythm (starting at [X], going round clockwise to [Circle],
then going back counterclockwise to [X], and back again).
Keep this going, and when you get to the main menu there will
be mostly spaces and a few underlines rather than words in all
the choices. Also, no characters will speak, including Bosses
and Aku-Aku. Reset your Playstation to get it back to normal.
